What do teachers make Teach 13-Feb-07
What do teachers make Teach
WHAT DO TEACHERS MAKE?
The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued," What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."
To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?"
Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, You want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, then began...) Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor. I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental...
You want to know what I make?" She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.) I make kids wonder. I make them question. I make them criticize. I make them apologize and mean it. I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions. I teach them to write and then I make them write. I make them read, read, read. I make them show all their work in math. I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity. I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe. I make my students stand to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, Because we live in the United States of
America. Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.
(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.) "Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant... You want to know what I make? I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make?"
THIS IS WORTH SENDING TO EVERY TEACHER YOU KNOW. (And everyone on your mailing list, for that matter).
THERE IS MUCH TRUTH IN THIS STATEMENT: "Teachers make every other
profession "

''''''What A Teacher'''''' ''''''What A Teacher''''''
In September of 2005, a social studies school teacher from Arkansas did
Something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with permission
Of the school superintendent, the principal, and the building supervisor,
She took all of the desks out of the classroom.
The kids came into first period, they walked in; there were no desks.
They obviously looked around and said, "Where's our desks?"
The teacher said, "You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn
Them."
They thought, "Well, maybe it's our grades."
"No," she said.
"Maybe it's our behavior."
And she told them, "No, it's not even your behavior."
And so they came and went in the first period, still no desks in the classroom.
Second period, same thing. Third period. By early afternoon television
News crews had gathered in the class to find out about this crazy teacher
Who had taken all the desks out of the classroom. The last period of the
Day, the instructor gathered her class.
They were at this time sitting on the floor around the sides of the room.
She said, "Throughout the day no one has really understood how you earn
The desks that sit in this classroom ordinarily. Now I'm going to tell you."
She went over to the door of her classroom and opened it, and as she did
27 U.S. veterans, wearing their uniforms, walked into that classroom,
Each one carrying a school desk. And they placed those school desks
In rows, and then they stood along the wall. By the time they had
Finished placing the desks, those kids for the first time I think perhaps
In their lives understood how they earned those desks.
Their teacher said, "You don't have to earn those desks. These guys did
It for you. They put them out there for you, but it's up to you to sit here
Responsibly, to learn, to be good students and good citizens, because
They paid a price for you to have that desk, and don't ever forget it."
