A popular non-profit group that sponsors Little League baseball and senior programs is struggling to stay afloat following accusations that two of its officers stole $145,000 in bingo proceeds. The popular game has helped the Wayne Ford Civic League sponsor community programs since 1952. Now, it’s struggling to pay its debts following accusations that a divorced couple swindled money from the proceeds to pay their own bills and for groceries from Sam’s Club and other personal items.

A two-year investigation culminated Thursday when prosecutors charged Neal and Shari Greenfield of Westland with embezzlement over a five-year period.

"Playing bingo with my grandmother is among the best of my childhood memories," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kim Worthy. "You have to shake your head in disgust when you hear about stealing bingo money from our seniors."

Thousands of dollars were unaccounted for when Neal Greenfield was the league president from 1999 to 2004 and when Shari Greenfield served as the vice president from 1999 until the couple divorced in 2003. The couple entered a not guilty plea before the judge, C Charles Bokos on Thursday in the 18th District Court. A preliminary hearing is set for august the 17th, but until them, the couple will be spending their days in the Wayne County jail unless each of them pays a bail of $25, 00 each.

If they are convicted, they’ll face up to 10 years in prison and have to pay a $15,000 fine or three times the amount for embezzlement, whichever amount is more.

An investigation launched by the Michigan Lottery Charitable Gaming Board into the Greenfield’s handling of the bingo money led to the league losing its gaming licenses more than a year ago.

"The state's gaming commission revoked the seven bingo licenses that we relied upon as revenue to sustain the operation of the league," President Victor Barra said.

Authorities believe that Neal Greenfield ultimately stole about $32,243 from the league and Shari Greenfield embezzled about $113,437.

"The Greenfield family has run that organization for years, and they got so comfortable with it that they treated it as if it was their own company, instead of a charitable organization," said Detective Sgt. Chris Benson.
